David Kaufman

David Kaufman is a Partner at Third Rock Ventures, where he focuses on investments in Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Pharmaceuticals, Oncology, Immunology, Vaccines, and Global Health across Early Stage, Late Stage, and Post-IPO. He is investing from a $1.1B fund raised in June 2022 and invests in companies across the United States, with a focus on Massachusetts, Boston, the East Coast, and New England. He serves on the boards of Abata Therapeutics and HOOKIPA Pharma Inc., and has invested in companies including Abata Therapeutics and Hookipa Pharma. Before becoming a Partner at Third Rock Ventures (formerly a Venture Partner there), he held roles including Acting Head of Clinical and Translational Development at Asher Biotherapeutics; Chief Medical Officer and Head of Translational Development at the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute; and multiple leadership positions at Merck (Head, Translational Oncology; Executive Director, Oncology Clinical Research; Director, Oncology Clinical Research; Associate Director, Merck Drug Development and Leadership Program). Earlier in his career, he was an Instructor in Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Fellow in Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a Resident in Internal Medicine at UCSF. David earned degrees from Swarthmore College, The Rockefeller University (PhD in Molecular Virology/Immunology), and Weill Cornell Medical College (MD), and resides in Boston, Massachusetts.
